Endoscopy Research at Tenwek:
Due to the high frequency of esophageal cancer seen at Tenwek, Tenwek Endoscopy is conducting numerous research studies investigating the causes and epidemiology of esophageal cancer in Western Kenya. Current studies underway include:
THINKER: This control-trial epidemiological study interviews esophageal cancer patients from endoscopy and compares them with healthy control patients from eye-ward. The interview evaluates participants for possible lifestyle risk factors such as cooking, diet and farming practices.
DIRECT: A study that is evaluating directly related family members of esophageal cancer patients to determine if they have a higher risk of pre-cancerous esophageal changes.
EXPECT: This study is evaluating the long-term effectiveness of Radio Frequency Ablation and tissue removal as treatment for patients with pre-cancerous esophageal lesions.
